The Cornish Pirates ignite the passion in children for rugby

Following their inaugural and successful Bradfords Community Cup competition event held at the Mennaye Field last year, this year two such events have taken place through the Cornish Pirates community programme, both sponsored by Bradfords Building Supplies.

The first was recently held at Mounts Bay Academy, and the second this past week at St. Austell RFC.

This year’s first event at Mounts Bay Academy brought together some 200 children – boys & girls from years 4/5/6 - from Primary schools around West Cornwall.

Schools participating, each with a Cornish Pirates player (names in brackets) helping coach and manage them, were as follows:

Sennen School (Will Crane), Gulval School (Olly Adkins), Nancledra School (John Stevens), Connor Downs Academy (Alex Everett), Heamoor Community Primary School (Rory Parata), St Buryan Academy Primary School (AJ Cant), St Hilary (Arwel Robson), Pensans Community Primary School (Hayden King), St Just Primary School (Jack Andrew), St Mary’s Catholic School (Alex Schwarz), Alverton Community Primary School (Joe Elderkin).

As for the event at St. Austell RFC, which attracted Primary Schools from mid-Cornwall, similar numbers participated, again with a Cornish Pirates player (names in brackets) helping coach and manage each school. The list was follows:

Ladock CoE School (Carwyn Penny), The Bishops CoE Learning Academy (Robin Wedlake), Grampound Road CoE School (Steele Barker), Blisland Community Primary School (Bear Williams), St. Mewan CP School (Garyn Smith), St. Wenn School (Tom Kessell), Roche CP School (Will Britton), St. Columb Major Academy (Will Trewin), Gorran School (Will Gibson), Indian Queens School (Marlen Walker), Treverbyn Academy (Shae Tucker), Beacon Academy (shared coaching by players), Nanstallon Primary School (shared coaching by players).

Referees officiating at St. Austell RFC were Cornish Pirates’ Community Engagement Manager Sam Teasdale, and rotating players Will Trewin, Will Britton, Steele Barker, and Carwyn Penny. Once again, all the participating youngsters were presented with medals.

Bradfords Building Supplies and the Cornish Pirates would like to give two teams the opportunity to get the chance to play in the final of the Bradfords Community Cup, which takes place at the Mennaye Field, Penzance, on Friday the 5th of May – the same day as the Cornish Pirates will take on Jersey Reds in the semi-final of the Championship Cup.

Voting for your team – The two school teams with the most ‘likes’ will be taken to Mennaye Field for a day they will never forget, so please make sure you are following us to see updates on the Cornish Pirates Community Cup competition.

Get voting for your team and get the community behind them to give them the chance of this amazing opportunity!

Voting will close on the 24th of April, and the 2 winning teams will be announced on Tuesday the 25th of April 2023.
