14 try spectacular by the Reds who rediscover their form

Redruth racked up a cricket score against a game but outclassed Newport side. The visitors never gave up but had no answer to the power of the Redruth scrum and maul, nor to the quick incisive running of both backs and forwards.

Any time Newport gained some possession they were inevitably cut down on or behind the gain line. The bonus point was in the bag after 22 mins and in all the Reds ran in 14 tries, 7 in each half and fly-half Frazer Honey had field day with the boot putting over 23 points. Notable for the try scorers was a 2nd half hat-trick from replacement hooker MacKenzie Oliver.

The visitor’s spirit though was not in question and with time running out they pounced upon a loose Reds pass and quickly transferred the ball to winger Charlie Gamble who speed over for a try in Hellfire Corner to a roar of approval from the Reds faithful. This was superbly converted from the touchline by Jacob Leonard and the Newport side were cheered back to the half-way line.

On a dry day with a moderate crossfield wind Newport opted to play up the hill. A Honey penalty started things off and was soon followed by tries for Trewin, Bonds (2), one a 60 yard effort following an interception and a typical driving maul try for Brown. The bonus point now achieved the Reds kept up the pressure and added further tries by Williams and Thomas (2).
Half-Time: Redruth 48 – 0 Newport (Salop)

There was to be no let-up in the 2nd period. Every scrum produced either a penalty or great go forward ball for the Reds and Newport were unable to stop the Reds maul which made yards seemingly at will. 2nd half tries were added by Oliver (2) (one of these coming from a driving maul and the other in open play) Bazalgette (2), Pascoe and a Penalty Try when a driving maul that had travelled 15 yards was pulled down on the line.

Newport got their consolation score on 74 mins but Redruth had the last word with Oliver finishing off a driving maul to complete his hat-trick on the final whistle. Former captain Sam Stevens made his comeback from injury off the bench today and looked sharp with one 30 yard break catching the eye but he just failed to round the Newport full-back for a score to dine out on.
