The Wave Project, the UK’s leading Surf Therapy charity, is thrilled to announce its recognition as the winner of the prestigious Inclusion Cornwall Award.
This exciting honour coincides with the 20th anniversary of Inclusion Cornwall, a milestone celebrating two decades of their unwavering mission to promote inclusivity across the county.
The award was presented to The Wave Project for its pioneering Adaptive Surfing Programme, which opens blue spaces to individuals with a wide range of both physical and invisible disabilities, who may also be affected by mental health challenges. By making surfing accessible to all, this initiative is not just about sports, it is about breaking boundaries, building confidence and creating a sense of belonging for children and young people across Cornwall and beyond.
Surfing for Everyone, No Matter the Ability
The Wave Project’s Adaptive Surfing Programme has transformed the surfing landscape in Cornwall, with three additional hubs across the UK. Tailored to meet individual needs, these sessions offer personalised experiences with the support of highly trained surf coaches and dedicated volunteers. With adaptive surfboards, beach wheelchairs, adjustable wetsuits and step-free access at sites like Watergate Bay in Cornwall, Croyde in North Devon, Scarborough in North Yorkshire and Sandown on the Isle of Wight, The Wave Project ensures that the ocean is accessible for everyone.
A Personal Experience
One of The Wave Project's surfers in 2024, who lives with spinal cord damage and other significant medical challenges, approached their first adaptive session with trepidation. However, what unfolded was nothing short of life changing. Expecting a passive experience, they discovered a full-body workout, feeling the thrill of surfing while engaging forgotten muscles and challenging their limits.
The impact wasn’t just physical. After struggling with feelings of worthlessness, the session reignited emotions they hadn’t felt in years, freedom, achievement and joy. As they shared on the day: “Going surfing with you has renewed my desire to live, not just exist.”
