Are you election ready? Make sure you’re registered to vote and check your photo ID

Voters in Cornwall are being reminded to make sure they are registered to vote and have a valid form of photo ID ahead of the UK Parliamentary Election on July 4.

The deadline to register to vote is June 18, and if you want to cast your ballot at a polling station you must take your photo ID with you.

Accepted forms of ID include:
•    Passport
•    Driving licence
•    Government issued older or disabled person’s bus pass
•    Blue Badge
•    Defence Identity Card
•    Identity card bearing the Proof of Age Standards Scheme hologram (a PASS card)

The full list of accepted ID is available on the Electoral Commission’s website.

You can still use your photo ID if it's out of date, as long as it looks like you. The name on your ID should be the same name you used to register to vote.

Residents who are registered to vote but do not have one of the accepted forms of ID can apply for free ID (a voter authority certificate) on the gov.uk website. The deadline to apply is 5pm on Wednesday, June 26.

Kate Kennally, Returning Officer and Chief Executive at Cornwall Council, said: “It is important that Cornwall’s residents make sure they’re election ready. If you need help applying for free ID or want to request an application form, please get in touch so we can support you with this.

“It may seem early but checking now means you will be ready to vote in July.”

Voters also have the option to vote by post or proxy. The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm Wednesday, June 19, and the deadline for a proxy vote is 5pm Wednesday, June 26.

Find out more about the different ways of voting on the Cornwall Council website.
